Tyenna Big Treee reserve

Maydena 13 min (dirt road)
Whites Road

Home Tree is a short distance from the Lady Binney Reserve, and is one of the widest stringybark trees ever recorded. A short informal walking track leads visitors to the tree, winding its way through a beautiful rainforest understory dense with Leatherwood trees.

Home Tree is just one of several giant Eucalyptus obliqua located in the area. In 2019 the logging machinery was just 150m away from cutting down this tree. The quick work of Big Tree Hunters finding it and reporting its existence saved this tree and the remaining forest.

Home Tree (Euc. obliqua)
71 metres tall
5.5 metre diameter

The trail length to Home Tree is 100 metres with an option to continue out into clearfell 300 metres. The trail can be tricky to follow with no signs or indicators.

Difficult, but mostly flat. Some large logs to step over and slippery exposed roots. Can be muddy at times after rain.

No formal signage indicates the walking track or the route. Look for pink flagging tape as the only indicator. Have the points saved to your favourites on your Google Maps app before leaving Maydena.

A great short addition to a visit to Lady Binney Reserve. This is a much denser forest understory which is sharply contrasted with Lady Binney.

The Winter Trident

A special tree found in the Lady Binney Reserve is the Winter Trident. This prime example of an Eucalyptus obliqua is 71 meters tall. Commonly called stringybark here in Tasmania and messmate on the mainland of Australia. The Winter Trident is located at the Lady Binney Reserve in the Florentine Valley where one of the best big tree walks is found.

VISITATION BEST PRACTICE GUIDE

We all want to experience the trees, however, we also must appreciate that we all contribute to an accumulative impact.

  • Phytophthora is a microscopic pathogen that can kill trees. Typically it is transported into new areas on people's footwear and camping equipment. Simply cleaning your shoes can help prevent the spread. However, the most effective control measure is applying a disinfectant like PhytoClean which specifically targets phytophthora spores and destroys them in seconds. You can purchase a small amount of PhytoClean in our shop to use on your travels.

  • Tracks are there to provide access, but they are also very effective environmental control measures. Tracks limit the impact of hundreds of feet that can compact soils which limits nutrient absorption by the trees. Tracks are also very effective at controlling erosion and the spread of phytophthora.

  • We all want a great photo but standing or climbing on the tree base can damage the tree's vascular system that is very close to the surface under the bark. Once the vascular system is damaged no nutrients can be transported and the tree declines in heath.
